On February 5th, Professor Grigorios Tsokas of the Department of Geology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, was invited to visit Chinese School of Classical Studies at Athens (hereinafter referred to as 'CSCSA') and gave a special lecture titled 'New Advances in Geophysical Exploration and Case Studies'.
Professor Zokas is a member of the Central Archaeological Council of Greece and an academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. He is a leading scholar in the field of archaeological geophysical survey in Greece, and his team will be responsible for the geophysical survey work of CSCSA's Aggelokastro archaeological project. In the lecture, Professor Zokas systematically introduced the basic principles of various geophysical methods and their applications in archaeological detection and cultural heritage protection. These mainly include magnetometry, electrical resistivity, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and tomography. He focused on how to integrate these techniques and combine them with multi-source information such as aerial imagery for comprehensive surveys. Through typical cases from sites of different periods in Greece, the lecture also specifically demonstrated the practical effectiveness of the aforementioned methods in field archaeology and cultural heritage protection.
After the lecture, Professor Zokas and Dean Li Xinwei held in-depth discussion on implementation plan for the geophysical survey of the Aggelokastro project. Both sides expressed their willingness to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the field of archaeological geophysical surveys.
